National Hope for Henry Day began in 2019. The Hope for Henry Foundation introduced it to honor children facing serious illnesses. This special day encourages communities to support young patients with joy and encouragement.
It emphasizes the importance of fun and laughter during challenging times. The foundation, established in 2003, has reached over 120,000 children across more than 40 hospitals.
The day is named after Henry Strongin Goldberg, a boy from Washington, D.C., who battled Fanconi anemia. Despite his illness, Henry remained cheerful and active, inspiring those around him. His parents, Laurie Strongin and Allen Goldberg, founded the Hope for Henry Foundation to continue his legacy.
They aimed to bring happiness to hospitalized children through special programs and events. National Hope for Henry Day serves as a reminder of Henry’s spirit and the impact of kindness.
Start with a Smile
Bring cheer to a child in treatment by sending a care package. Include games, art supplies, and something soft or cozy. Ask your local hospital what’s needed most. A thoughtful gesture can brighten a difficult day.
Dress Up for a Cause
Organize a superhero costume day at work or school. Let everyone channel their inner strength and honor real-life heroes. Take photos and share encouraging messages online. Positive energy travels far when people feel involved.
Read Stories That Uplift
Visit a children’s hospital and offer to read a fun book. Stories transport kids away from hospital walls. Choose titles filled with laughter and hope. If you can’t go in person, record a cheerful video instead.
Support the Helpers
Donate to organizations that make hospital stays more humane. These groups often provide games, themed parties, and small rewards. Every dollar helps spread happiness. Contributions don’t need to be huge to make a meaningful impact.
Host a Mini Celebration
Create a cheerful event for kids facing illness in your community. Invite musicians, magicians, or therapy dogs to visit. Add balloons and treats for a magical touch. Even an hour of laughter helps ease a tough journey.
