History

National Fluffernutter Day celebrates a sandwich made with peanut butter and marshmallow creme. It’s sweet, sticky, and full of comfort.

The sandwich got its fun name in 1960. An ad agency came up with the word “fluffernutter” to help market the idea. They combined “fluffer” from Marshmallow Fluff and “nutter” from peanut butter.

But the sandwich itself goes back further. In 1918, Emma Curtis of Massachusetts shared a recipe during World War I. She called it the “Liberty Sandwich.” It used peanut butter and marshmallow creme on oat or barley bread.

Around 1920, Archibald Query sold his marshmallow creme recipe to H. Allen Durkee and Fred Mower. The two men started making Marshmallow Fluff, which quickly became a household favorite.

Over time, the sandwich became more popular, especially in New England. People began to see it as more than just a snack—it became a piece of childhood. National Fluffernutter Day was created to celebrate that feeling.

While no one seems to know exactly who started the day or when, fans of the sandwich have embraced it with open arms. It’s a playful way to enjoy a classic and remember a simple treat that brings big smiles.

How to celebrate

Get Creative in the Kitchen

Try more than just the classic sandwich. Use marshmallow spread and peanut butter in cookies or brownies for a twist. Toasted fluffernutter quesadillas add a fun, crispy crunch. Want something cold? Swirl both into a milkshake and top it with crushed graham crackers. There’s no wrong way to explore new flavors.

Pack a Lunch with a Smile

Make someone’s day by packing them a fluffernutter. Cut it into fun shapes using cookie cutters for an extra surprise. Pair it with apple slices or crunchy celery sticks to balance the sweetness. Add a little note with a doodle for extra charm.

Host a Friendly Challenge

Gather friends or family for a fluffernutter-themed contest. Who can invent the most unique version? Set a time limit, provide ingredients, and judge based on taste and creativity. Keep it lighthearted and full of laughter.

Share the Fun Online

Snap a photo of your fluffernutter creation and post it on your favorite platform. Use a fun caption and tag friends. Join others sharing their spins on the sandwich. Add a poll to your story: toasted or not?

Introduce Someone New

Offer a fluffernutter to someone who’s never tried one. Tell them why people love it so much. Their reaction might surprise you. Great food often brings good conversation. Keep it simple and sweet, just like the sandwich.
