History

National Family Fun Day was first launched in 2023 by National Day Calendar®. It was created by Amy Monette, a CEO and Partner, who wanted to highlight the power of family time.

She believed that setting aside a day just for fun could help families grow closer. Her idea quickly gained attention because many people felt the same way—families needed more time to laugh, connect, and enjoy each other’s company.

This day was designed to remind parents, children, and relatives that the best moments often come from the simplest things.

Whether it’s playing a board game, cooking together, or going on a walk, small acts of joy can have a big impact. National Family Fun Day encourages people to take a break from their busy lives and focus on what really matters.

It arrives just before summer kicks off, making it the perfect moment to step back, recharge, and be present with loved ones. The day continues to grow in popularity each year as more families look for meaningful ways to reconnect.

Its message is simple but powerful—make time for joy, laughter, and shared memories. That’s something every family can use a little more of, no matter the season.

How to celebrate

Get Outside and Move

Sunshine and fresh air make everything better. Try a new park, walk a scenic trail, or toss a frisbee. You don’t need fancy plans—just space to roam and time together. Pick a fun challenge like a scavenger hunt or nature bingo. Laughter often comes easiest under an open sky.

Cook Up Something Together

Head to the kitchen and team up. Let kids stir, sprinkle, or decorate. Create your own pizza, bake cookies, or make fruit kabobs. Sharing the process brings everyone closer. Plus, meals taste even better when made with smiles and teamwork.

Host a Backyard Camp-In

Pitch a tent under the stars or bring sleeping bags inside. Tell stories, play flashlight tag, or make s’mores in the oven. Create a cozy corner full of blankets and snacks. Unplugging from screens helps make room for laughs, surprises, and sleepy giggles.

Make Art as a Team

Cover the table, grab supplies, and let creativity shine. Paint, color, sculpt, or collage something wild. Try a group project where each person adds to the design. No pressure to be perfect—just pure imagination running free. Celebrate the masterpiece when it’s done!
