Tips4
  • DO emphasize the charity/giving-back angle—it's core to National Doughnut Week (especially UK) and resonates deeply with customers. Authenticity matters; show the impact.
  • DON'T rely on free doughnuts alone. Instead, offer strategic incentives (BOGO, free gift with purchase, loyalty bonus points) to maintain margins while still driving traffic.
  • DO start promoting 3–4 weeks before; use countdown messaging, teaser content, and early-bird pre-orders to build momentum and capture intent.
  • DO create fresh content daily during the week (new flavor, new design, customer stories, behind-scenes). Consistency and daily novelty beat a single 'big' post.

History

National Doughnut Week was created in 1992 by Christopher Freeman, a baker from Dunns Bakery in London. A powerful news report about the Ethiopian famine inspired him.

Freeman wanted to use his skills to help children in need, so he came up with the idea of using doughnuts as a way to raise money for charity. The first National Doughnut Week quickly gained support from other bakeries, turning it into an annual event.

Over the years, the week has grown in popularity. Bakeries across the UK participate by creating special doughnuts and donating a portion of the sales to children’s charities. The event has raised significant funds, particularly for The Children’s Trust, which supports children with brain injuries.

The tradition continues to thrive, combining the simple pleasure of doughnuts with a meaningful cause!

How to celebrate

Host a Doughnut Party

Why not throw a doughnut-themed party? Invite friends and family over for a sweet celebration. Provide a variety of doughnuts, from classic glazed to fancy-filled ones. Set up a toppings bar with sprinkles, chocolate, and fruit. Let everyone create their doughnut masterpiece. This tasty gathering guarantees laughter, fun, and full bellies.

Doughnut Baking Adventure

Get hands-on and bake doughnuts at home! Choose a simple recipe or try something adventurous like filled or frosted varieties. Baking at home adds a personal touch, and the smell of freshly made doughnuts is irresistible. Share your homemade goodies with neighbors or coworkers to spread the joy of National Doughnut Week.

Visit Local Bakeries

Support your local bakery by visiting and buying their special doughnuts for the week. Many bakeries create unique flavors or offer deals during this time. Trying these creations is a delicious way to enjoy the week while supporting small businesses. Plus, each purchase often helps a charitable cause, making your treat even sweeter.

Doughnut-Themed Games

Turn your love of doughnuts into a playful game. Organize a doughnut-eating contest, or try the classic game where participants must eat a doughnut hanging from a string without using their hands. These light-hearted activities bring out the competitive spirit and guarantee lots of laughs. Don’t forget to take pictures!

Doughnut Charity Drive

Use National Doughnut Week as an opportunity to give back. Host a charity drive where people can donate money or goods in exchange for a doughnut. Partner with a local bakery or make your own to give away. This approach combines the fun of the week with the spirit of generosity, making it a win-win for everyone involved.
