History

Cookie cutters have a long history, but this celebration highlights their role in modern holiday traditions!

This celebration happens during the first week of December. It was designed to encourage people to embrace the holiday spirit by baking cookies using a variety of shapes.

National Cookie Cutter Week began in the mid-1990s, thanks to Paula Mullins from Kentucky. As a passionate cookie-cutter collector, Paula wanted to create a special time to celebrate these tools that bring so much joy to holiday baking. In 1996, Paula circulated a petition to establish the week, giving a cookie cutter to each person who signed. Later, in 2019, National Cookie Cutter Day was launched, always landing on the first day of this week.

By founding this event, Paula Mullins honored the cookie-making craft and brought together a community of incredible enthusiasts. Today, many families and friends use this time to bake and decorate cookies, adding a creative and festive touch to their holiday preparations.

How to celebrate

Bake Up a Storm

Dust off those cookie cutters and bake up a storm! Gather some favorite recipes, and start making a variety of shapes. Whether it’s stars, trees, or gingerbread men, the more, the merrier. Involve the whole family for extra fun. Nothing beats the aroma of freshly baked cookies filling the kitchen.

Host a Decorating Party

Invite friends over for a cookie decorating party. Provide icing, sprinkles, and edible glitter. Set up stations and let everyone unleash their creativity. Even better, turn it into a friendly competition with prizes for the best-decorated cookies. It’s a festive way to spend time with loved ones.

Get Crafty

Use cookie cutters for more than just baking. Create festive ornaments or gift tags. Roll out some salt dough, cut out shapes, and let them dry. Paint and decorate cookie creations for a fun craft activity, or turn them into personalized gifts and holiday decorations.

Cookie Cutter Exchange

Organize a cookie-cutter exchange. Ask everyone to bring a unique cookie cutter to swap. It’s a fantastic way to expand cookie cutter collections without spending a dime. Plus, it’s a fun excuse to get together and share baking tips and tricks.

Share the Sweetness

Bake a batch of cookies and share them with neighbors or local community centers. Package them in cute boxes or bags. Spreading sweetness can bring joy to others and brighten their day. It’s a simple yet thoughtful way to celebrate the week.

Social Media Show-Off

Show off cookie creations on social media to connect with other baking enthusiasts. Post pictures of beautifully decorated cookies and perhaps bring inspiration to someone else to join the fun and start baking!

Explore New Recipes

Try out new cookie recipes during this festive week. Look for international cookie recipes or unique flavor combinations. Experimenting with different recipes can add excitement to a baking routine and might even lead to the discovery of a new favorite cookie.

Visit a Cookie Museum

Take a trip to the National Cookie Cutter Historical Museum in Missouri. Learn about the history of cookie cutters and see unique collections. It’s an educational and entertaining way to appreciate the art of cookie-making!
