Tips4
  • DO leverage the post-holiday 'guilt cleanup' angle—people want permission to finish their chocolates before January. Time messaging for Dec 26-28.
  • DON'T just sell; tell stories about sourcing, craftsmanship, or emotional connections (comfort, celebration, self-care). Chocolate is emotion wrapped in foil.
  • DO create shareable, visually stunning content. Chocolate is inherently photogenic—glossy finishes, sparkle, rich colors stop the scroll on Instagram/TikTok.
  • DON'T ignore the sustainability angle. 98% of U.S. households buy chocolate; conscious consumers actively seek ethical, fair-trade, bean-to-bar brands.

History

Chocolate has a history that goes back about 4000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. While it was originally used as a drink for medicinal and ritual purposes, over the years chocolate has evolved from a bitter substance for drinking to a solid, sweetened candy that is made with milk.

In 1828, Coenraad Johannes Van Houten, a Dutch inventor and chemist, figured out a way to produce chocolate in a solid form instead of just a beverage. And after solid chocolate bars were made, the chocolate was eventually turned into all sorts of creative types of candies.

Truffles, rum balls, chocolate covered caramels, peanut butter balls, fruit filled candies and so many more. And National Chocolate Candy Day is the perfect time to try and enjoy them all!

Although National Chocolate Day, International Chocolate Day and World Chocolate Day are all celebrated earlier in the year, this is the day that is particularly meant to celebrate chocolate candies. Falling just between the Christmas and New Year holidays, National Chocolate Candy Day offers a perfect time to finish off those boxes of candy that were received as gifts throughout the holiday season!

How to celebrate

Enjoy Some Chocolate Candies

The idea behind National Chocolate Candy Day is for people to finish eating up all of that chocolate candy that they were given for Christmas. Perhaps it came in a stocking in the form of a Santa-shaped chocolate candy wrapped in foil. Or maybe it arrived in the form of Tootsie Rolls, Peanut Butter Cups or Hershey’s Kisses. Perhaps a box of chocolate candy was given to the family by the boss at work or through a Secret Santa gift exchange. No matter how it got into the house, National Chocolate Candy Day is here to enjoy eating it!

Share Chocolate Candy with Others

Of course National Chocolate Candy Day doesn’t have to be celebrated all alone! Get out into the world and share some of that chocolate candy with friends and family. In fact, many shops often have after-Christmas sales on holiday items such as candy, so perhaps it’s a great time to buy some chocolate candy just for the purpose of giving it away.

Watch Some Films Featuring Chocolate Candy

Making National Chocolate Candy Day fun doesn’t have to be all about eating! Watch one of these movies to get into the spirit of the day: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). Johnny Depp stars in this unique adaptation of Roald Dahl’s entertaining 1964 novel. Chocolat (2000). Another Johnny Depp movie that also stars Juliette Binoche, this one tells the story of a woman who moves into a French village to open a chocolate shop just as Lent is beginning. Forrest Gump (1994). Though the whole film isn’t really about chocolate candy, a box of chocolate does feature and the quote “Life is like a box of chocolates” is a famous quote from this iconic film.
