History

National Child Protection Week began in 1990, driven by the dedication of the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN).

This initiative was spearheaded by Rosemary Sinclair and Christine Stewart, who saw the pressing need to bring child abuse and neglect into the public eye. They wanted to change how Australian society viewed and addressed these critical issues.

The week-long event aims to educate and engage communities across Australia about the importance of child safety. It promotes the message that protecting children is everyone’s responsibility.

Each year, activities and resources help communities understand how they can contribute to a safer environment for children. These efforts are vital for raising awareness and fostering protective measures against child abuse.

Over the years, National Child Protection Week has grown, building on past campaigns to enhance community involvement and support.

It emphasizes the need for early intervention and the importance of addressing the root causes of abuse and neglect. By doing so, NAPCAN continues to work towards creating a safer future for every child in Australia.

How to celebrate

Host a Fun Workshop

Get creative with a workshop that focuses on safety skills for kids! Invite local experts to teach children about personal safety through interactive games. Engage kids with role-playing activities to practice saying no and asking for help. Make learning safety tips fun and memorable!

Organize a Community Picnic

Plan a community picnic where families can gather, share stories, and learn about child protection. Include fun activities like face painting, sack races, and storytelling sessions. Invite local law enforcement or child protection services to talk about safety in a friendly, approachable manner.

Create Safety Posters

Encourage kids to design colorful posters that promote child safety and awareness. Display these masterpieces in schools, libraries, and community centers. Hold a poster contest with fun prizes to motivate young artists. This not only spreads awareness but also empowers children to think about safety creatively.

Run a Charity Walk

Set up a charity walk or run to raise funds for child protection organizations. Invite everyone in the community to join and wear themed costumes. Provide information booths along the route with tips on protecting children. This event can combine fitness, fun, and a great cause.

Host an Awareness Fair

Organize an awareness fair featuring various stalls with information about child protection resources. Include fun activities like a bouncy castle, arts and crafts, and live music. Invite local organizations to participate and share their services. This creates a festive atmosphere while educating the community.

Movie Night Under the Stars

Plan a family-friendly movie night in a local park. Screen films that highlight themes of kindness, safety, and community support. Provide popcorn and blankets for a cozy evening. Before the movie, we will briefly talk about the importance of child protection and how everyone can play a part in it.

Share Stories on Social Media

Encourage people to share stories and messages about child protection on social media. Create a unique hashtag for the week and invite everyone to participate. Share informative posts, videos, and personal experiences to raise awareness online. This digital approach helps spread the message far and wide.
