National Cartonnage Day began in 2021, thanks to Claudia Squio, founder of Colorway Arts. She created the day to share her love for making fabric-covered boxes.
Claudia had taught the craft for years and wanted more people to enjoy it.
With help from her team, she launched an online celebration filled with free lessons, friendly workshops, and live demos. Crafters from many backgrounds joined the first event.
They used simple tools, cardboard, and cloth to create useful, decorative items. The warm response encouraged more people to try cartonnage, even if they’d never done anything like it before.
Although the official day started recently, the craft itself has roots in old French traditions. In the 1800s, people made sturdy boxes using cardboard and glued-on fabric or paper.
These handmade containers often held sewing supplies, letters, or small gifts. Claudia took this classic idea and gave it a fresh twist. She made the process easier for modern hands and shared it through workshops and kits.
Her goal wasn’t just to teach a technique—it was to spark creativity and build community. National Cartonnage Day now brings joy to homes around the world, one handmade box at a time.
