Tips4
  • DO create urgency with day-only or limited-time toppings. Standard pricing all month kills conversion; make April 30 feel special and FOMO-driven.
  • DON'T ignore micro-influencers and local creators—they have authentic reach with Gen Z bubble tea fans. Seeded drops > big paid campaigns.
  • DO tie the day to brand story and values: Heritage (Taiwanese origins), customization (flavor freedom), and community (bring friends + family) resonate.
  • DON'T just say 'promotion'—give it narrative. Kung Fu Tea's '#Boba4All' and 'WTF is Boba' campaigns work because they educate + entertain, not just sell.

History

Bubble tea got its start in Taiwan in the 1980s and made its way to the United States, starting in California, in the 1990s.

As this fun beverage began growing in popularity, many different bubble tea cafes and shops began cropping up in cities and countries all over the world!

The first National Bubble Tea Day was celebrated in 2018, founded by the Kung Fu Tea company, which is based in Queens, New York.

The company chose to hold the celebration on April 30 because it was the anniversary of when the company was established in 2010.

How to celebrate

Drink Some Bubble Tea

Head out to a specialized bubble tea cafe, or order some up at an Asian inspired restaurant that serves it. For those who have never had bubble tea before, it might go well to start with one of the basic recipes that simply includes black tea, sweetened milk, brown sugar and (of course!) the tasty tapioca pearls. Those who already have experience with this drink might want to celebrate National Bubble Tea Day by trying out a new flavor. Some of the more adventurous flavors might be based around fruit, like honeydew melon, passion fruit, lychee or plum. And don’t forget that bubble tea can be made from different kinds of tea, including black tea, white tea, green tea or herbal fruit tea. Plus, it can be ordered with special plant-based, non-dairy milks such as coconut or soy milk. Delicious!

Try Making Bubble Tea at Home

A super way to pay respect for National Bubble Tea Day might be to learn how to make this tasty treat at home. It’s actually much easier than it might seem! Source some special tapioca pearls in a favorite color and flavor from an Asian market or other store that stocks a variety of Asian foods. Boil the tapioca pearls by following the package instructions, turning them into the magical “bubbles”. Add to a recipe that mixes tea with milk, sugar, ice and whatever flavorings are desired.

Get a Reusable Bubble Tea Straw

Because the tapioca pearls are so big, a special straw is needed to drink bubble tea. Celebrate National Bubble Tea day and also help keep the oceans clean by purchasing a reusable bubble tea straw. Get a wide, eco-friendly one made from bamboo or glass and keep with your for those emergency bubble tea runs!

FAQ
How did bubble tea influence modern dessert trends?
Bubble tea’s chewy tapioca pearls inspired the creation of desserts like bubble tea ice cream and cake. In countries like South Korea, cafes offer bubble tea-inspired soufflés and pancakes. This trend highlights how boba has evolved into a versatile ingredient for creative culinary uses.
Why do some people call bubble tea “boba”?
The term “boba” originated in Taiwan and refers to the tapioca pearls. Interestingly, in Mandarin slang, “boba” can also mean “large breasts,” a playful reference that stuck in popular culture. This dual meaning has sparked plenty of humorous memes online.
What are some superstitions related to bubble tea?
In Taiwan, some students believe that drinking bubble tea before exams can bring bad luck. The reasoning? Tapioca pearls might “block” knowledge from flowing. This quirky superstition adds an amusing twist to the drink’s cultural significance.
How do people celebrate National Bubble Tea Day in creative ways?
In Japan, some fans create bubble tea art using pearls to form fun shapes. In the U.S., bubble tea parties with DIY toppings have become a hit. This day often inspires playful celebrations worldwide.
What is the science behind the perfect tapioca pearls?
Perfect pearls rely on starch gelatinization, achieved by boiling them at precise temperatures. This process ensures their signature chewiness. Mistakes in preparation can result in either mushy or hard pearls, which ruin the bubble tea experience.
What unusual flavors have emerged recently in bubble tea?
Cucumber, cheese foam, and durian bubble teas have gained popularity in different regions. Cheese foam, especially, adds a creamy, salty contrast to the sweetness of tea. These flavors show how inventive bubble tea makers continue to push boundaries.
What’s the connection between bubble tea and sustainability?
Some shops now use reusable cups, plant-based straws, and biodegradable tapioca pearls. In Taiwan, eco-friendly initiatives aim to reduce waste while preserving bubble tea culture. These efforts reflect growing environmental awareness in the industry.
How did bubble tea evolve into a luxury item?
In some high-end restaurants, bubble tea now features gold-topped pearls or exotic ingredients like saffron. These premium versions can cost up to $20 per cup. This luxurious twist makes bubble tea a symbol of indulgence.
What role did bubble tea play during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Bubble tea shops adapted by offering home kits and delivery options. These kits allowed fans to recreate their favorite drinks during lockdowns. The drink’s comforting nature provided a sense of normalcy during uncertain times.
Why is shaking bubble tea important?
Shaking evenly distributes sugar, tea, and milk, creating a smooth texture. It also forms the frothy “bubbles” that give the drink its name. This step ensures every sip offers the perfect balance of flavor.
