National Authenticity Day
In a world that abounds with fakes, filters, and forced smiles, National Authenticity Day brings something refreshing—honesty. It’s a celebration of people who stay true to themselves, no matter what.
Position your brand as a champion of workplace authenticity and self-expression, resonating with employees and professionals tired of performative culture.
- Share employee spotlights celebrating real stories and unfiltered moments from your team
- Launch a 'drop the filter' campaign encouraging customers/employees to show their genuine selves
- Host a virtual or in-person event where people share vulnerable stories tied to your brand values
- Create a social media challenge (#AuthenticYou) inviting followers to post unedited, honest moments
National Authenticity Day started in June 2021. It was created by Erin Hatzikostas, the founder of b Authentic Inc., a company that encourages people to be themselves, especially in the workplace.
After spending years in leadership roles, Erin noticed how often people tried to fit in by acting fake or overly polished.
She believed there was a better way. So, she decided to create a day that celebrates truth, not image.
The idea came during the pandemic. Many people, while working from home, let go of formal habits and showed more of their real lives.
Suits were replaced with sweatshirts, and pets or kids often joined video calls. That shift made Erin realize how refreshing honesty could feel, even in professional spaces.
She launched the first National Authenticity Day to give people one day each year to celebrate being real. Whether in conversation, decision-making, or creative work, showing up as your true self became the heart of the day.
Every August 16, people are encouraged to drop the mask, speak clearly, and live openly. What started as one woman’s idea has grown into something bigger.
It now stands as a reminder that being yourself doesn’t just feel good—it creates stronger, deeper human connections.
Speak from the heart
Choose one topic that’s been on your mind. Say what you feel. Honest words build trust. You don’t need fancy language—just truth. Even a short, simple sentence can make someone feel seen.
Share a real story
Tell a tale from your past—no editing, no filters. Vulnerable moments make genuine bonds. It might feel strange at first, but others will likely relate. Real stories stick with people far longer than polished ones.
Try something that scares you
Pick a small fear, like singing aloud or dancing around your kitchen. Courage sparks growth. Facing a fear, even briefly, boosts confidence. That small push forward often opens unexpected doors.
Unplug and reflect
Turn off notifications. Take a moment to reflect on your most genuine values. Quiet helps clarity. Without the noise, your thoughts can breathe. That silence often reveals what matters.
Highlight someone’s truth
Give a shout‑out to a friend who always stays true. Celebrate their real self. That spreads warmth.Let them know what you admire about them. People often don’t realize how much their honesty inspires.
Set an “only‑you” challenge
Wear something bold or cook a favourite childhood recipe. Personal choices express who you are. Even one small act shows you’re listening to yourself. Self-expression doesn’t need permission.
Create a little ritual
Light a candle or sit in nature. Then speak aloud one thing you appreciate about your true self. Rituals give space to pause and reset. They help anchor you when life gets noisy.
