History

Middle-Level Education Month began in 2019 and was initiated by Representative Raúl M. Grijalva. He introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to recognize March as a month dedicated to highlighting the importance of middle-level education.

This resolution aimed to address the unique educational needs and challenges faced by young adolescents during this critical stage of development.

The Association for Middle-Level Education (AMLE) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) have been key supporters of this month. These organizations emphasize the importance of providing a supportive and effective educational environment for students aged 10 to 15.

They advocate for middle-level education by offering resources, organizing events, and promoting best practices to enhance the learning experience for middle school students.

These efforts aim to ensure that middle school educators receive the recognition and support they deserve for their vital role in shaping young lives.

How to celebrate

Host a Middle School Talent Show

Middle schoolers love to show off their skills! Organize a talent show where students can sing, dance, or perform magic tricks. Teachers can participate, too, adding to the fun. Everyone can cheer and enjoy the diverse talents on display.

Create Fun Classroom Challenges

Transform learning into an exciting game. Set up classroom challenges related to different subjects. Think math puzzles, science experiments, or history trivia. Offer small prizes or certificates to encourage participation and keep the energy high.

Dress-Up Days for Spirit Week

Who doesn’t love a themed dress-up day? Plan a spirit week with different themes for each day, like Pajama Day, Twin Day, or Unique Hair Day. This will brighten the school atmosphere and boost school spirit.

Host an Appreciation Breakfast

Teachers and staff deserve some extra love. Host a breakfast in their honor with coffee, pastries, and heartfelt thank-you notes from students. This small gesture will make them feel valued and appreciated for their hard work.

Create a Collaborative Art Project

Art brings people together. Start a collaborative art project where each student contributes a piece to a large mural or sculpture. Display the final masterpiece in the school hallway for everyone to admire and celebrate the collective creativity.
