Tips4
  • DO: Center empowerment, humor & dignity in your messaging. Menopause is a natural life stage, not an illness to 'fix.' Avoid infantilizing language & outdated tropes (no grandmother gardening stereotypes).
  • DON'T: Use 'menopause' as a label on generic anti-aging products without clinical backing. Audit ingredients; be transparent about what's actually different from standard skincare/wellness.
  • DO: Educate healthcare gaps & destigmatize conversations. Position your brand as an advocate—not just a seller. Support research, workplace policies, and medical education alongside product promotion.
  • DON'T: Treat menopause as a seasonal campaign (October only). This is a multi-year life stage affecting millions; invest in sustained messaging, community, and support year-round.

History

Menopause Month began in 2009 as a way to raise awareness about the often misunderstood and stigmatized phase of life many women experience.

It was officially established by the International Menopause Society (IMS), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The goal was to promote a better understanding of menopause and provide support for women during this transition.

October was chosen as Menopause Month, with a special focus on October 18th, known as World Menopause Day. These dates encourage discussions about the physical and emotional changes that occur during menopause and highlight available treatment options and support systems.

The creation of Menopause Month has helped break the silence surrounding menopause, encouraging women to share their experiences and seek medical advice.

Before its establishment, menopause was often viewed negatively, with little attention given to its health impacts. By dedicating a whole month to the subject, organizations aim to change outdated views and promote more accurate information.

This observance also focuses on the health risks associated with menopause, such as bone density loss and heart disease. It encourages women to take proactive steps in managing their health during and after this life stage.

Today, Menopause Month serves as a platform to educate both women and healthcare providers, ensuring that the challenges of menopause are better understood and managed with care and support.

How to celebrate

Explore Mind-Body Wellness

Yoga, meditation, or even a simple walk can do wonders for managing menopause symptoms. Organize a group class or practice solo. Stretching and deep breathing are excellent tools for managing stress, hot flashes, and mood swings. Plus, it’s a chance to try something new!

Spread Awareness on Social Media

Create posts, memes, or share educational articles about menopause. Use platforms like Instagram or Twitter to get the conversation going. You can even join existing campaigns, such as #MoreThanHotFlashes, to reach a wider audience. Empowering others through information has never been easier.

Support a Menopause Charity

Consider donating to organizations that provide resources and research on menopause. You can also raise funds through a community event like a bake sale or charity walk. Small acts of kindness can have a big impact on funding better care and education.
