History

Medical Assistants Recognition Day honors the vital work of medical assistants in healthcare. Celebrated annually on the third Wednesday of October, this day falls within Medical Assistants Recognition Week.

In 1955, medical assistants from Kansas convened to establish a national body for their profession. They formed the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), with 78 representatives from 15 states each contributing $5 to initiate their memberships.

Maxine Williams co-founded the AAMA and became its first president in 1956. She believed that the entire healthcare industry would benefit from the work of certified medical assistants.

Over the years, the AAMA has promoted the recognition of medical assistants through events like Medical Assistants Recognition Week and Medical Assistants Recognition Day. These observances highlight the critical role medical assistants play in patient care and the healthcare system.

Medical Assistants Recognition Day serves to acknowledge and celebrate the dedication and contributions of medical assistants in the healthcare field.
