History

Martin Z. Mollusk Day began in 1974 in Ocean City, New Jersey. Mark Soifer, who worked in public relations for the city, wanted a fun event to bring attention to the beach town.

He came up with the idea of a small hermit crab who could predict an early start to summer.

That’s how Martin Z. Mollusk was born. The first event happened in March, but the weather didn’t cooperate. So, they moved it to May, hoping for sunny skies.

Since that first try, the event has grown into a much-loved tradition. Every year, Martin appears on the beach wearing his tiny costume.

The crowd gathers to watch him search for his shadow. If he sees it, people believe summer will arrive one week earlier than planned. The moment feels silly but exciting.

Over the years, the celebration has grown. Music, costumes, and community fun fill the day. Families, neighbors, and visitors gather to enjoy the show.

Many look forward to this day as the unofficial start of summer in Ocean City. Martin may be small, but his role has become big in the hearts of those who return each year for the fun.
