History

World Letter Writing Day was established by Richard Simpkin as a tribute to the joy and excitement he felt when a hand-written letter would arrive in his mailbox.

His appreciation of the hand-written word came about as a result of a project he was working on called “Australian Legends”, he would send out letters to everyone he considered to be an Australian Legend with the interest of arranging a personal interview and photography session.

There was just something amazing about receiving a letter with the legends own personal touch to it, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that while hand-written letters are collectible, digital communication certainly is not.

FAQ
What’s the most unusual item ever sent by post?
A bank in 1916 mailed an entire building in 50-pound segments through the U.S. Postal Service. This happened due to a postal loophole, allowing heavy items to be shipped as long as they didn’t exceed the weight limit for individual packages. The building’s segments were all successfully delivered and reconstructed at the destination.
How did wartime letters shape history?
During World War II, “V-mail” revolutionized military correspondence. Soldiers wrote letters on specialized forms, which were photographed and printed on microfilm to save space. These letters preserved soldiers’ morale and provided historians with personal insights into wartime life.
Are there any lost art forms connected to letter writing?
Victorian-era letter locking was an intricate method of folding letters to ensure privacy. Writers used clever folds, slits, and wax seals instead of envelopes. This practice was both practical and decorative, with some designs taking hours to create.
What role do letters play in modern relationships?
Despite digital communication, many people write letters to deepen connections. Couples exchange letters for anniversaries, capturing their emotions more thoughtfully than texts or emails. A growing trend of “future letters” lets people write notes to their partner for specific future dates.
Why were letters once considered dangerous?
In 1840s England, “penny post” made letter writing more accessible, which unexpectedly boosted crime. Criminals used letters for blackmail, forgery, and scams. Some recipients even feared opening suspicious letters due to rumors of poisoned ink.
What’s the connection between letters and time capsules?
Time capsules often include letters for future generations. In 2017, workers found a 100-year-old letter inside a Scottish church wall, written by stonemasons who built the structure. These messages offer a glimpse into daily life long past.
How has letter writing influenced activism?
Letter-writing campaigns remain a powerful tool for advocacy. Amnesty International’s “Write for Rights” initiative, held annually, generates millions of handwritten letters demanding justice for human rights abuses. These efforts have led to the release of wrongfully imprisoned individuals worldwide.
What’s a humorous myth about letters?
Some believe you can mail anything if it has a stamp. While amusing, it’s not true. A 1970s man tried mailing himself in a box but was caught. Postal workers regularly encounter bizarre items, but living things are strictly off-limits.
How do famous authors use letters in their work?
Authors often weave letters into novels for depth. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein begins with letters written by an explorer. Bram Stoker’s Dracula unfolds through journal entries and correspondence, creating a dramatic and immersive storytelling format.
What’s the strangest way people celebrate letter writing?
In some countries, people release messages in bottles into the sea. While not traditional mail, it’s a whimsical take on sending a letter. Messages have traveled thousands of miles, sparking unlikely friendships between strangers.
