History

Lesbian Visibility Week was first celebrated in 1990 when it originated in West Hollywood, California. The event was coordinated through the efforts of the West Hollywood Lesbian Visibility Committee, which was founded the previous year.

The event started as a week filled with programmed activities and workshops to improve public awareness about lesbian identities and concerns.

Celebrated at the end of April, this week is coordinated to coincide with Lesbian Visibility Day, which takes place on April 26. Lesbian Visibility Day was formed in 2008 through the efforts of American activist Amy Ellis.

She promoted the day within the community to honor lesbian visibility and create a safe space for all women who are queer.

With one community and so many brilliant individuals, Lesbian Visibility Week promotes this community on a truly iconic and global stage!
