History

International Universal Health Coverage Day began with a shared vision: health care should be available to all, regardless of income or location.

In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed a resolution urging countries to accelerate progress toward universal health coverage (UHC) as an essential priority for international development.

This resolution emphasized that everyone should have access to quality, affordable health care. In 2014, the Universal Health Coverage Coalition started celebrating 12 December as UHC Day to commemorate this milestone.

Then, in 2017, the UN officially designated 12 December as International Universal Health Coverage Day, making it an annual observance to promote health for all.

Since its inception, this day has served as a global rallying point, reminding us of the ongoing efforts needed to ensure that health systems are strong, equitable, and resilient.

It brings together governments, organizations, and individuals to advocate for policies that prioritize health equity and to share stories that highlight the importance of accessible health care.

By marking this day each year, the international community reaffirms its commitment to achieving universal health coverage by 2030, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of health and well-being.
