History

International Sloth Day was created by AIUNAU, a non-profit foundation dedicated to protecting all forms of wildlife.

The AIUNAU members in Columbia have been working with sloths since 1996, as they became appalled to find out how many sloths every year were being killed by cars or power lines, and how many other were being captured to be made into household pets.

Once they rescue a sloth, they nurse it back to health, and then proceed to release it back into the wild, where it belongs.

International Sloth Day was established in November 2010 as a way of helping people get to know a little more about these shy, quiet creatures that are known for their tenderness for one another and keep them from going entirely extinct, as several species of sloth have already.

FAQ
How did sloths influence ancient human cultures?
Recent archaeological findings in Brazil suggest that ancient humans coexisted with giant ground sloths. Evidence indicates that humans fashioned jewelry from sloth bones approximately 27,000 years ago, highlighting the significance of sloths in early human societies.
What unique behaviors do sloths exhibit regarding their fur?
Sloth fur hosts a diverse ecosystem, including algae and various insects. This symbiotic relationship provides camouflage and supports biodiversity, making sloths integral to their habitats.
Are there any myths or misconceptions about sloths’ diets?
Contrary to the belief that all sloths are strict herbivores, studies suggest that some prehistoric sloths, like the Mylodon, were omnivorous. This challenges the assumption that all sloths have always been plant-eaters.
How do sloths’ physical adaptations aid their survival?
Sloths have unique fur that grows in the opposite direction of most mammals, allowing rainwater to run off easily when hanging upside down. This adaptation helps them stay dry in their rainforest habitats.
What is the significance of sloths’ slow metabolism?
Sloths have a remarkably low metabolic rate, about half that of other mammals their size. This adaptation allows them to survive on a diet primarily consisting of leaves, which provide limited energy.
How do sloths contribute to forest ecosystems?
By descending to the ground to defecate, sloths may help fertilize trees and promote nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. This behavior, though risky, plays a role in maintaining the health of their environment.
What are some unique threats that sloths face today?
Beyond habitat loss, sloths are threatened by human activities such as illegal pet trade and urbanization, which lead to increased encounters with domestic dogs and traffic accidents. Conservation efforts aim to mitigate these threats and protect sloth populations.
How do sloths’ reproductive habits differ from other mammals?
Female sloths typically give birth to one offspring per year after a gestation period of about six months. The young cling to their mothers for several months, learning essential survival skills in the treetops.
What role do sloths play in indigenous folklore?
In various indigenous cultures of Central and South America, sloths are often seen as symbols of patience and tranquility. Their unhurried nature is revered and incorporated into local myths and storytelling traditions.
How has modern technology aided in sloth conservation?
Researchers use tracking devices and data analysis to monitor sloth movements and health. This technology provides insights into their behaviors and habitats, informing conservation strategies to ensure their survival.
