History

International Skinny Dip Day, celebrated annually on the second Saturday in July, invites individuals to experience the freedom of swimming without clothing. This observance promotes body positivity, self-acceptance, and a deeper connection with nature.

The roots of this celebration trace back to 1976 when body positivity advocates Lee Baxandall and Eugene Callen proposed a National Nude Weekend each July. In 1992, The Naturist Society, founded by Baxandall, expanded this into Nude Recreation Week.

Building upon this foundation, the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) officially designated the second Saturday of July as International Skinny Dip Day in 2018.

This day serves as the culminating event of National Nude Recreation Week, an AANR tradition for over four decades.

Throughout history, notable figures such as Benjamin Franklin and John Quincy Adams have enjoyed swimming in the nude. This practice underscores a longstanding appreciation for the liberating experience that International Skinny Dip Day seeks to celebrate.

By participating in this day, individuals worldwide embrace a tradition that champions freedom, body acceptance, and the simple joy of swimming unencumbered.

How to celebrate

Host a Private Gathering

Invite close friends to a secluded spot like a private pool or a hidden lake. Ensure the location offers privacy and that everyone feels comfortable. Setting clear boundaries and obtaining consent from all participants fosters a respectful environment.

Join an Organized Event

Many communities host events for this day. Research local naturist groups or organizations that may be arranging group swims. Participating in such events can provide a sense of community and shared celebration.

Combine Activities with Nature

Enhance the experience by pairing your swim with other outdoor activities. Consider hiking to a remote swimming hole or enjoying a picnic by the water. Engaging with nature in multiple ways can deepen your appreciation for the environment.

Support a Charitable Cause

Turn your celebration into a fundraiser for a meaningful cause. Organize a charity swim where participants donate to join. This approach adds purpose to your festivities and benefits those in need.

Educate and Advocate

Use this day to promote body positivity and challenge societal norms around nudity. Engage in conversations with friends or share informative content on social media. Raising awareness can foster a more accepting and open-minded community.
