History

International Month of Black Women in the Arts started as a celebration to recognize and honor the creative contributions of Black women in various art forms.

It was first observed to shine a spotlight on their often-overlooked impact in the art world, which includes everything from visual arts and literature to music and dance.

The month was launched by activists and artists who wanted to address the significant underrepresentation of Black women in these fields and the unique challenges they face, such as discrimination and lack of recognition.

This initiative serves as an important platform for raising awareness about these barriers while celebrating the resilience and talent of Black female artists. It also promotes their work and pushes for greater visibility and support within the broader arts community.

Over the years, it has gained momentum, inspiring individuals and organizations to join in recognizing and amplifying the voices of Black women across the world of art.

How to celebrate

Curate Your Own Mini Art Show

Why not turn your living room into a gallery? Find works by Black female artists online, print them out, and proudly display them around your space. Even better, invite friends for an “opening night” with snacks and a playlist featuring songs by Black women musicians!

Get Into the Books

Grab a novel, poem collection, or memoir by a Black female writer. Dive into stories that explore unique perspectives and life experiences. From classics to modern bestsellers, there’s a book waiting to inspire every reader!

Watch a Film or Play

Look for films or plays directed by or starring Black women. These stories often highlight underrepresented narratives in cinema and theater. Bonus points if you share your thoughts on social media or host a movie night with friends.

Support Local Artists

Take time to discover and buy art from local Black female creators. Whether it’s paintings, crafts, or jewelry, supporting their work makes a direct impact. You’ll get something beautiful, and the artist gets well-deserved recognition.

Share the Love on Social Media

Become a cheerleader for Black women in the arts! Follow, share, and shout out their work on social platforms. Highlight your favorite artists, writers, or performers, and get others excited to join in too!

Donate to Arts Organizations

Consider donating to non-profits that uplift Black women in the arts. Your donation could fund a community art space or scholarships for young artists. Every bit helps bring more creativity into the world.
