History

The International Day of Plant Health, is a relatively new global observance established by the United Nations. This day emerged as a direct legacy of the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH), celebrated in 2020.

Zambia primarily promoted the idea for the day. However, it received unanimous support from the UN General Assembly, with Bolivia, Finland, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania co-signing the resolution.

The proclamation of this special day aimed to bring worldwide attention to the crucial role of plant health in sustaining life on Earth. It focuses on how protecting plants can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect biodiversity, and foster economic development.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has strongly advocated for this cause. It highlights the consequences of plant pests and diseases responsible for losing up to 40% of global food crops.

The journey to its establishment saw significant milestones. Among these, the FAO Director-General’s official inauguration of the IYPH in December 2019 set the stage for enhanced global efforts towards preserving plant health.

This initiative underscores the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health. It emphasizes adopting sustainable practices to protect plants from pests and diseases.

How to celebrate

Nurture Your Garden

Spend some time in your garden, focusing on the health of your plants. Pruning, watering, and adding compost can all help improve plant vitality.

Choose Organic Produce

Next time you shop, opt for pesticide-free fruits and vegetables. This supports farmers who use sustainable practices and contributes to healthier plants.

Support Food Security Charities

Consider donating to organizations focusing on food security and sustainable farming. Your contribution can help improve plant health and food availability worldwide.

Participate in Community Events

Look for local events or online webinars that celebrate International Day of Plant Health. Joining such activities can broaden your understanding and connect you with like-minded individuals.

Advocate for Sustainable Practices

Encourage local policymakers to support sustainable agricultural practices. Policies that promote soil health, biodiversity, and reduced pesticide use can significantly impact plant health.

Plant a Tree

Trees are vital for the environment, providing oxygen, improving air quality, and offering habitat to wildlife. Planting a tree is a direct way to contribute to plant health and the planet’s well-being.

Promote Pollinator-Friendly Spaces

Pollinators are crucial for plant health. Creating spaces in your garden that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators can help maintain the balance of our ecosystems.
