In 1997, two groups took a bold step to challenge police violence. The Collective Opposed to Police Brutality in Montreal joined forces with the Black Flag group in Switzerland. Together, they launched the International Day Against Police Brutality.
They picked March 15 to mark a global day of protest and awareness. Their goal was clear: stop police from using unjustified force, especially against the most vulnerable people.
The first events were small but powerful. Marches, discussions, and local meetings gave people a voice. More cities and countries joined each year. What started with two groups quickly grew into an international movement.
Participants called out unfair treatment and demanded justice for those harmed by police actions. Each year, the message spread wider and stronger.
This day has become more than a protest. It’s a chance to unite people across borders. Artists, students, families, and advocates gather to share stories and push for safer communities.
The focus stays on stopping abuse and building trust between people and police. Those early organizers sparked a fire that still burns today. Their work reminds the world that silence protects violence—while action helps change systems that no longer work for everyone.
