History

International Cloud Appreciation Day began with one man’s simple idea—clouds deserve more attention. Gavin Pretor‑Pinney, a writer from the UK, started the Cloud Appreciation Society in 2005.

He wanted to bring together people who enjoy looking at the sky. Not just scientists or artists, but anyone who finds joy in clouds. Over the years, the group grew and gained members from across the world.

In 2022, the society launched the first official Cloud Appreciation Day. It asked people everywhere to stop, look up, and share what they saw.

They could upload a photo and a short thought to the Memory Cloud Atlas, a digital sky gallery that opened only for that one day. Thousands joined in. The sky became a space for quiet connection.

The event returned in 2023 and again in 2024. Each year, more people took part. Families, students, photographers, and casual observers all contributed.

The Memory Cloud Atlas collected their views and made them available to explore online later. One page showed blue skies. Another showed stormy streaks. All shared a single date.

Pretor‑Pinney created the day to remind people that clouds belong to everyone. Wherever you live, you can look up and see something unique.

Cloud Appreciation Day continues to grow as more people discover the joy of watching the sky, if only for a few minutes.

How to celebrate

Cloud‑shape hunt

Lie on a blanket or sit in a quiet spot. Spot shapes in clouds. Try to find animals, objects, or faces. Share ideas with friends or family. Small conversations can spark smiles.

Photo and upload

Take a sky picture with your phone. Share it online using the Cloud Appreciation Society’s Memory Cloud Atlas. Add a few words about how that cloud made you feel. No cost. No special gear needed.

Cloud art activity

Sketch or paint a cloud scene inspired by what you see. Use simple art supplies at home. Try cotton balls or paint. Let each design reflect a mood or thought.

Cloudspotter practice

Download the CloudSpotter app or grab a guide to learn cloud types. Spot common ones like cirrus, cumulus or altostratus. Make your own discovery list. Challenge yourself to find rare types if you can.

Mindful sky pause

Set aside a quiet moment during your day. Look up and watch clouds drift by. Take slow breaths. Let your mind unwind and step away from stress. Even a few minutes helps clear thoughts.
