History

International Box Wine Day began in February 2021, thanks to Wine Nook, a company that designs stylish dispensers for boxed wine . They wanted to spotlight the growing appeal of boxed wine and its eco-friendly packaging.

By creating this day, they encouraged people to appreciate the convenience and sustainability of wine in a box.

The idea of boxed wine started much earlier. In 1965, Australian winemaker Thomas Angove introduced the first “wine cask,” using a plastic bag inside a cardboard box.

This design made wine more affordable and easier to store. Later, in 1967, Charles Malpas improved the design by adding a plastic tap, making it even more user-friendly.

Over the years, boxed wine gained popularity for its practicality and lower cost. In the 1980s, it became common in households looking for value and convenience. By the 1990s, improvements in wine quality helped change perceptions, making boxed wine a respectable choice for many.

Today, International Box Wine Day celebrates this evolution. It reminds us that good wine doesn’t have to come in a bottle. With better packaging and quality, boxed wine offers a smart option for everyday enjoyment.

How to celebrate

Host a Box Wine Tasting

Invite friends over and try a variety of boxed wines from different regions. Serve small bites to match each pour. Use scorecards for fun comparisons.

Pair with Easy Meals

Match boxed wine with simple home-cooked dishes. Try a crisp white with veggie pasta or a bold red with sliders. Keep things relaxed and flavorful.

Go Outdoors

Pack your favorite box in a cooler and enjoy it outside. Pour a glass at the park, beach, or even your own balcony. Fresh air adds flair.

Get Creative with Cocktails

Mix boxed wine into refreshing sangrias or spritzers. Add fruit, herbs, and a splash of soda for something unique. Shake up your usual drink routine.
