History

International Ataxia Awareness Day began in 2000. The National Ataxia Foundation (NAF), founded in 1957, initiated this global effort to highlight ataxia’s challenges. Ataxia refers to a group of rare neurological disorders affecting coordination, balance, and speech.

Recognizing the need for greater public understanding, NAF established this day to unite individuals and organizations worldwide in raising awareness and supporting those affected.

Since its inception, International Ataxia Awareness Day has grown, with numerous events and campaigns held globally. These initiatives aim to educate the public, support research, and foster a sense of community among those impacted.

The day serves as a platform for sharing personal stories, promoting scientific advancements, and advocating for better resources and treatments. Through collective efforts, the awareness day continues to shine a light on ataxia and the importance of continued support and research.

How to celebrate

Share Your Story

Open up about your experiences with ataxia. Whether you’re living with the condition or know someone who is, your story can educate and inspire others. Use social media platforms to spread awareness and foster understanding.

Participate in Fundraising Events

Join or organize events like walks, runs, or bike rides to raise funds for ataxia research. These activities not only support a good cause but also bring communities together.

Wear Blue

Don blue clothing or accessories to show your support for ataxia awareness. Encourage friends and family to do the same, creating a visual statement of solidarity.

Educate Yourself and Others

Take time to learn about ataxia and its impact. Share information through conversations, social media, or by hosting informational sessions. Knowledge is a powerful tool in combating misconceptions.

Support Research Efforts

Consider donating to organizations dedicated to ataxia research. Financial contributions can accelerate the development of treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
