History

Icelandic Language Day began in 1996. The idea came from Björn Bjarnason, who was the Minister of Education at the time. He wanted to create a day that celebrated and protected the Icelandic language.

He chose November 16 because it is the birthday of Jónas Hallgrímsson, a famous Icelandic poet and naturalist. Jónas is well-known for his efforts to preserve the Icelandic language during the 19th century. His work helped ensure that the language remained pure and free from outside influences.

The government embraced the idea, and the first celebration took place in 1996. Since then, Icelandic Language Day has become an important tradition. Each year, events and activities are held across Iceland to honor the language.

The day also serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping the Icelandic language alive and thriving in the modern world.

How to celebrate

Dive into Icelandic Literature

Grab a classic Icelandic book and get lost in the tales of ancient sagas. Explore the magical world of Icelandic folklore, where trolls and elves roam free. Reading aloud with friends or family can add extra fun.

Attend a Local Event

Check out a local library or cultural center for special events. Many places host poetry readings, language workshops, or lectures. You might even catch a concert where songs are performed in Icelandic.

Play with Words

Challenge yourself by learning some new Icelandic words or phrases. Try them out with friends, or even better, use them in your daily conversations. Impress everyone by mastering a tongue-twisting Icelandic sentence.

Cook Up Some Icelandic Recipes

What better way to celebrate than by cooking some traditional Icelandic dishes? Bake some kleinur (Icelandic donuts) or whip up a hearty fish stew. Cooking while speaking a few Icelandic words adds a delicious twist to the day.

Share the Love Online

Spread the joy of Icelandic Language Day by sharing your experiences on social media. Post about your favorite Icelandic words or share a short video of you trying to speak the language. Use hashtags to connect with others celebrating around the world.
