The Great American Grump Out began in 2002, created by Janice A. Hathy, an author and speaker who cared about stress relief. She wanted people to stop grumbling and focus on laughter and kindness instead.
Her idea was simple: feeling better starts with thinking more positively. She believed humor could make a real difference in how we feel every day.
Hathy designed the day to give people a break from complaining, even just for a little while. She encouraged folks to smile more, laugh easily, and share good energy with others.
Since it started, the Great American Grump Out has taken place each year on the first Wednesday of May.
On this day, people across the country try to replace sour moods with cheerful attitudes. Many find that even small changes, like telling a funny story or helping a friend, can lift their spirits.
The celebration has spread through workplaces, schools, and homes, bringing moments of joy to everyday life.
Although simple, the idea has lasting power. A little laughter can break a bad mood faster than you might expect, making life feel lighter and more connected.
