History

Global Smurf Day started in 2011 as a way to celebrate the beloved blue characters and their creator, Peyo. Born Pierre Culliford, Peyo introduced the Smurfs in a Belgian comic in 1958.

Over time, the tiny creatures gained fans worldwide through cartoons, toys, and later, full-length films. Sony Pictures Animation launched the day to mark the release of “The Smurfs” movie and to honor Peyo’s birthday, June 25.

The first event saw fans in multiple countries dress up as Smurfs, aiming for a world record. Thousands joined in, wearing blue outfits, white hats, and plenty of smiles. They gathered in cities like New York, Brussels, and Mexico City. That day, the Guinness World Records officially recognized it as the largest global gathering of people dressed as Smurfs.

Now, each year, the celebration falls on the Saturday closest to June 25. People take part through costumes, themed events, movie marathons, and parties.

What began as a fun way to promote a film turned into a yearly tribute. Today, Global Smurf Day brings fans of all ages together through joy, color, and shared memories.
