History

NASA created Global Selfie Earth Day in 2014. The space agency wanted a fun, visual way to connect people around the planet. They asked everyone to step outside, take a selfie with nature, and post it online using a special hashtag.

The goal wasn’t just to collect pictures. It was to build one big image made entirely of those photos. Each face or landscape became a tiny part of a giant photo of Earth.

That same year, NASA planned to launch five new missions focused on studying our planet. Global Selfie Earth Day helped bring attention to those efforts. The campaign gave people a way to take part in something bigger than themselves.

More than 50,000 photos poured in from over 110 countries. NASA used them to build a 3.2-gigapixel mosaic that people could zoom into and explore.

It wasn’t just about fun or tech. The event carried a deeper message. It reminded people that Earth is shared, fragile, and beautiful.

Whether someone lived near mountains or deserts, forests or cities, their photo helped tell a global story. That simple act—snapping one picture—turned into a symbol of unity and care for our only home.
