Tips4
  • Lead with RELIEF, not complexity. Students are overwhelmed by costs—position financial aid as the solution that makes college possible, not another form to fill out.
  • Make it actionable. Every post should point to a next step: 'Visit StudentAid.gov,' 'Sign up for our webinar,' 'Chat with an advisor.' Vague awareness won't move the needle.
  • Reach parents & guardians, not just students. Many families don't know aid exists or how to navigate it. Target both audiences in messaging.
  • Avoid jargon or define it immediately. 'SAI,' 'EFC,' 'ISIR'—most families don't know these terms. Plain language wins trust and engagement.

History

Financial Aid Awareness Month began as an effort to highlight the importance of financial aid for students seeking higher education.

This initiative aims to inform students and their families about the various financial resources available to help cover the costs of college. It provides essential information on scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs, ensuring that more students can afford to pursue their academic goals.

The concept of financial aid dates back to the 16th century when wealthy individuals helped fund education for the less fortunate.

Modern financial aid in the U.S. evolved significantly during the 20th century. In 1965, the Higher Education Act established federal financial aid programs, which became a cornerstone for supporting students financially.

This Act paved the way for the widespread availability of grants, loans, and work-study opportunities, making college more accessible to millions of students.

Financial Aid Awareness Month encourages students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is crucial for accessing federal and state aid. This month-long focus also helps families understand different financial aid options, making it easier to plan for educational expenses.

In April, 2024, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared that month as Financial Aid Awareness Month for the state of New York, giving them two times a year to focus on this need! By raising awareness and providing guidance, this initiative ensures that financial constraints allow students to achieve their educational dreams.

How to celebrate

Host a FAFSA Party

Invite friends and family to a fun FAFSA party. Set up laptops, serve snacks, and help each other fill out the FAFSA. Enjoy some background music and make it a supportive, productive event. Turning a daunting task into a social gathering can ease the stress and make the process more enjoyable.

Create Informative Posters

Get creative with colorful posters about financial aid. Hang them in local libraries, community centers, and schools. Include catchy slogans, essential dates, and useful tips. Eye-catching visuals can grab attention and spread important information quickly and effectively.

Organize a Workshop

Plan a workshop at your local community center or school. Invite financial aid advisors to speak and answer questions. Provide handouts with detailed instructions on filling out forms and applying for scholarships. Workshops can demystify the process and give attendees confidence.

Social Media Campaign

Launch a social media campaign to share financial aid tips and success stories. Use fun hashtags like #FinAidFun and #CollegeDreams. Post short videos, infographics, and reminders about deadlines. Engaging content can reach a wide audience and motivate more students to apply for aid.

DIY Financial Aid Kits

Assemble DIY financial aid kits with printed guides, checklists, and pens. Distribute these kits at local events or schools. Each kit can serve as a handy resource for families navigating the financial aid process. Personal touches in the kits can make a big difference.

Collaborate with Local Businesses

Partner with local coffee shops or bookstores to host “Financial Aid Fridays.” Offer discounts to students who bring in proof of FAFSA completion. These events can create a supportive community atmosphere and encourage students to complete their applications on time.
