The Festival of Owls Week began in 2003 as a “hatch-day” party for Alice, a Great Horned Owl. Karla Bloem, who worked at the Houston Nature Center, started this event to celebrate Alice’s birthday and educate people about owls.
Alice, a permanently injured owl, became the center’s star attraction. The first event was a hit, drawing 300 attendees with minimal advertising. This success inspired the festival to grow into a larger event over the years.
By 2008, over 1,000 people were attending the festival. The event expanded to include activities like live owl programs, owl-themed crafts, and educational talks. In 2015, the International Owl Center opened, further enhancing the festival’s offerings.
Today, it attracts thousands of visitors from around the world, including notable owl experts. The festival also features the World Owl Hall of Fame, recognizing contributions to owl conservation and education.
