Fair Housing Month began in response to the passing of the Fair Housing Act in 1968. This act, signed into law just days after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, made housing discrimination illegal based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, and later, disability and familial status.
The goal was to eliminate unfair treatment and open doors for everyone, no matter their background.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) spearheaded the annual celebration. Fair Housing Month takes place every April to honor the act’s anniversary and to remind people of the ongoing fight for equal housing rights.
