History

National Engineers Week has been celebrated for many years now, and rightly so! After all, the world would not be as we know it today if it was not for the incredible minds of engineers. The event first began in 1951, and it was started by the National Society of Professional Engineers.

The week was selected because it falls in line with the birthday of former President George Washington. Why President Washington, though? Well, he was considered the first engineer of the United States, especially for his survey work. Therefore, you may want to honor National Engineers Week by delving deeper into George Washington’s engineering work.

How to celebrate

Learn More About Engineers

For those who aren’t engineers, a good place to start might be by educating yourself on engineering work. You can do some research about the different types of engineers and the work that they are responsible for. Discover more about the education and training that is required to be an engineer as well. After all, you never know; this could be the perfect career for you!

Get to Know Famous Engineers

Another way to observe National Engineers Week is by learning about some of the most famous engineers. There are a lot of names that you may be familiar with, such as Henry Ford and Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla is arguably one of the greatest engineers the world has ever seen, and it is fascinating to learn all about his story and the impact that he has had. We’re sure you’ve heard of Tesla cars, but trust us; his impact in terms of engineering goes much, much further than this. If you’re not big on reading, don’t worry, as the film Tesla was released in 2020 and it tells the story of Nikola Tesla, who is played by Ethan Hawke. It is a great watch! Other famous engineers from different eras that are worth reading up on include Thomas Edison, George Stephenson, and Archimedes. We promise you; you will be amazed!
