Ekka People’s Day began in 1876 in Brisbane, Australia. It was initially known as the Intercolonial Exhibition.
The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) organized this event to showcase the state’s agricultural achievements. That first year, about 17,000 people attended, which was remarkable given Brisbane’s population at the time was only around 22,000.
The name “Ekka” is a shortened version of “Exhibition,” reflecting the local pronunciation. This event quickly became an annual tradition, celebrated with a public holiday to allow residents to attend.
Over the years, Ekka People’s Day has grown, attracting more visitors and expanding its range of attractions and activities. Today, Ekka People’s Day remains a highlight of the Royal Queensland Show. It features a mix of agricultural displays, competitions, food stalls, and entertainment.
