Tips4
  • Authenticity over flash: Fans spot forced campaigns immediately. Ensure your activation genuinely reflects your brand/IP's personality and values—stay true to canon.
  • Create shareable moments: Design photo ops, Instagrammable installations, and interactive elements that motivate attendees to tag you, use your hashtag, and extend reach far beyond the convention floor.
  • Bridge physical & digital: Always connect your on-site activation to an online experience (codes for home giveaways, social contests, follow-up emails). The magic happens when both channels work together.
  • Manage lines strategically: Build multiple engagement points (quick photo ops + full experiences) so fans with limited time can still interact with your brand. This maximizes touchpoints & prevents bottlenecks.

History

Comic-Con began in 1970 as a small gathering in San Diego. Shel Dorf, a comic book fan and writer, led the effort. He teamed up with a group of friends, including Richard Alf, Ken Krueger, and Mike Towry.

Together, they planned a one-day event called Golden State Comic-Minicon. It was held in a hotel basement and drew around 300 people.

That first meeting focused on comics, science fiction, and film. It set the stage for something much bigger.

The group soon organized a longer event later that same year. That second gathering became known as San Diego Comic-Con. It quickly attracted artists, writers, and fans from across the country. Through the 1970s and 1980s, the convention kept growing.

It moved to different venues around the city before settling at the San Diego Convention Center in 1991. By the mid-1990s, organizers renamed it Comic-Con International.

What started as a local fan event turned into one of the largest pop culture conventions in the world. Today, Comic-Con draws well over 130,000 people every year.

Fans come not just for comics but for film, games, animation, and TV. The event now shapes entertainment trends and creates space for fans and creators to connect.

How to celebrate

Start With a Game Plan

Comic Con is more than just a place to spot celebrities or buy collectibles. To enjoy it fully, start with a plan. Look over the event schedule, pick a few must-see panels, and build your day around them. With so much happening at once, it’s easy to miss things without a bit of prep. Arriving early helps beat the crowds and gives you time to explore before the big events begin.

Dress for Comfort and Fun

Dressing well can make a huge difference. Comfortable shoes are a must—there’s plenty of walking. Lightweight layers work best, since indoor and outdoor temperatures can change quickly. And don’t forget to bring a refillable water bottle. Staying hydrated keeps your energy up, especially when you’re on your feet for hours.

Respect Cosplayers and Creators

Comic Con thrives on creativity, especially in costumes. If you spot someone in cosplay, treat them with respect. Always ask before snapping a photo, and avoid touching their outfit. These costumes take time, money, and effort, and a little courtesy goes a long way. Kindness creates a more enjoyable space for everyone.

Let Tech Keep You in the Loop

Technology plays a bigger role than most people expect. Keep your phone charged, or bring a backup battery. Following the event’s social media channels helps you stay updated in real time. You’ll find last-minute schedule shifts, surprise appearances, or giveaways announced there first. Having your tech ready keeps you one step ahead.

Carry Smart, Snack Smart

Don’t overlook the little things. Pack a few snacks so you don’t have to wait in long food lines. A small bag can hold your essentials without slowing you down. If you meet an artist or writer you admire, say something thoughtful—it can spark a great conversation. These moments often end up being the most memorable.
