History

Chiropractic Founders Day marks the moment when a new kind of care began. In 1895, Daniel David Palmer performed what’s now known as the first chiropractic adjustment.

He believed the spine and nervous system were connected in ways that affected overall health.

When Palmer adjusted the back of a man named Harvey Lillard, the man claimed his hearing improved. That one event happened in Davenport, Iowa, and sparked a fresh idea in healthcare—using the hands to restore balance in the body without drugs or surgery.

Years later, Palmer’s son, B.J. Palmer, helped grow the practice and supported efforts to honor its beginning. In 1928, a chiropractor named Dr. Wray Hughes Hopkins suggested setting aside a day each year to remember the first adjustment.

Support grew from schools, clinics, and local leaders. Over time, the day gained wider attention, and some cities even gave it official recognition.

More than a century after that first spine movement, Chiropractic Founders Day continues to connect people with a hands-on approach to health.

It’s a time to reflect on where the care began and how far it has come, bringing relief to millions through simple, steady methods.
