History

Celebrate Shelter Pets Day began in 2010 with a simple online effort called “Shelter Pets Take Over Facebook Day.” The idea came from The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund, and the Ad Council.

These three groups teamed up to help more animals in shelters get adopted. They saw a need to shift public attention toward pets often overlooked in crowded shelters.

The campaign asked people to share photos and stories of their adopted pets. These posts helped others see how special rescued animals could be. Supporters flooded social media with happy faces, wagging tails, and hopeful captions.

That wave of kindness gave the event strong momentum. Over time, the campaign grew and became known as Celebrate Shelter Pets Day.

The Ad Council brought skill in messaging and outreach. Maddie’s Fund supported shelters with resources and care ideas.

The Humane Society shared its long experience helping animals in need. Together, they turned a one-time event into an annual tradition. It now takes place each year on the first Thursday after Thanksgiving.

Thanks to those early efforts, adoption stories reach far beyond local shelters. Today, the event connects animal lovers across the country and helps more pets find families to love.

How to celebrate

Share shelter pet stories

Start a social post about a shelter animal. Attach a charm-filled snapshot. Use a brief story that tugs at the heart. You might just spark someone else to open their home.

Volunteer or foster

Offer your weekday time walking dogs or brushing cats. Or host a foster pet for a few weeks. Giving hands-on care helps animals thrive.

Make and donate items

Craft simple toys from old T-shirts or socks. Knit cozier blankets. Drop them off with some treats or food. Your homemade items bring comfort and love.

Run or walk to raise awareness

Enjoy a jog with an adoptable dog from your shelter. Share a clip online. That effort spreads hope and highlights pets waiting for homes.

Host a micro‑fundraiser

Invite friends to donate supplies or cash. Use a simple event with snacks, photos, or pet themes. All proceeds ease shelter strain and improve animal lives.
