History

In the early 19th century, Brazil was a colony under Portuguese rule. In 1807, Napoleon’s forces invaded Portugal, prompting the royal family to flee to Brazil. This move elevated Brazil’s status, leading to increased autonomy.

However, in 1820, political upheavals in Portugal aimed to restore colonial control over Brazil. The Portuguese parliament demanded the return of Prince Pedro, who was acting as regent in Brazil.

Instead of complying, Prince Pedro chose to remain, declaring on January 9, 1822, his decision to stay, an event known as the “Dia do Fico” or “I Shall Stay Day.”

Tensions continued to rise as Portugal attempted to reassert its authority. On September 7, 1822, while traveling in São Paulo, Prince Pedro received news of the Portuguese Cortes’ attempts to limit Brazilian autonomy.

In response, he proclaimed Brazil’s independence near the Ipiranga River, famously declaring “Independence or Death!” This decisive act marked the birth of an independent Brazil, with Prince Pedro becoming Emperor Dom Pedro I.

The nation then embarked on a journey to establish its sovereignty and national identity.
