Bravehearts Day began in Australia in 1997 and was initiated by Bravehearts, an organization founded by Hetty Johnston, who started the event after her young daughter experienced sexual abuse. The event aims to raise awareness about child sexual assault and promote the protection of children.
The inspiration for Bravehearts Day came from a 1996 public demonstration in Belgium. Around 300,000 people gathered, holding white balloons, to protest child sexual abuse. This powerful image symbolizes children’s innocence and the collective hope for their protection.
Originally called White Balloon Day, the first celebrations encouraged people to release a white balloon as a symbol. However, because of more recent recognition of issues related to environmental care, the name of the day has been changed to Bravehearts Day. It has the same heart behind it, just without the balloon release.
Each year, communities, schools, and organizations across Australia participate in activities to support Bravehearts Day, including wearing white, hosting fundraising events, and spreading awareness about child safety. The funds raised help provide education, counseling, and legal support to victims and their families.
Decorate Paper “Balloons”
Organize a white balloon event. Gather friends and family, write supportive messages onto balloon-shaped papers and hang them around a community location such as on a bulletin board, to symbolize hope and raise awareness in a visually striking way.
Wear White
Encourage everyone to dress in white for the day. This simple act unites the community and sparks conversations. White clothing can be a powerful statement, highlighting the importance of child protection and safety.
Host a Fundraiser
Arrange a fundraising event. Plan a bake sale, car wash, or charity concert. The funds raised will support organizations working to prevent child sexual abuse and help survivors, such as Bravehearts. Creativity and fun can make a big impact.
Social Media Blitz
Use social media to spread the word and reach a wider audience. Share posts, stories, and facts about Bravehearts Day to create a digital wave of support that can be powerful and effective.
Educational Workshops
Set up educational workshops or seminars. Invite experts to speak about child safety and abuse prevention. Learning together strengthens the community’s resolve to protect children.
