Tips4
  • Do: Center authenticity & mental health first—avoid tokenism. This day is rooted in addressing real disparities in healthcare access and chronic stress affecting Black women. Make your campaign about actual solutions (discounts on therapy apps, mental health resources), not just aesthetics.
  • Don't: Treat this as a one-off trend or marketing gimmick. Brands like Cashblack partnered with multiple Black-owned businesses year-round; consistency matters. If you're marketing BGDO, commit to supporting Black women's wellness beyond October 11.
  • Do: Partner with Black women creators, mental health advocates, and Black-owned brands authentically. This shows you're reinvesting in the community, not extracting from it. Offer equitable compensation.
  • Don't: Use vague self-care messaging without acknowledging the systemic barriers (healthcare access gaps, racial/gender discrimination stress, wage gaps). Tie offers to real mental health resources.

History

The origins of Black Girl Day Off date back to 2020, when Tomeka Casanova founded it. The day was created to recognize stress as a leading precursor to chronic illnesses among Black women.

These include heart disease, breast cancer, and more. It serves as a call to action for Black women to practice self-care. In addition, it is a broader societal reminder of the importance of supporting the mental health of Black women, acknowledging their strength while addressing the health disparities they face.

Black Girl Day Off emerged as a powerful response to the unique pressures faced by Black women. Recognized annually on October 11, the day was established to encourage Black women to prioritize their mental health.

The initiative is particularly significant as it follows World Mental Health Day. Therefore, it emphasizes the need for a dedicated time for Black women to rest and recharge amidst the challenges of racial and gender discrimination.
