Alpha Kappa Alpha Day celebrates the founding of the first sorority created by African American college women. It began as a way to honor the legacy of sisterhood and service, started in 1908.
Ethel Hedgemon Lyle, along with eight classmates at Howard University, took the first steps. They built an organization focused on support, academic growth, and leadership.
Their vision grew into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, now a global group with hundreds of chapters and thousands of members.
The day reminds members and the public of the sorority’s lasting mission. Each year, chapters reflect on their roots and recommit to making a difference.
This observance isn’t only about the past—it highlights ongoing efforts that bring help and hope to communities. From education programs to health initiatives, the impact stretches far and wide.
People mark the occasion through service, recognition events, and outreach. They honor the founders’ bold move to shape a space for unity and progress. It’s a time to remember how one small group turned purpose into power.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Day continues to inspire new generations to lead, learn, and lift others. The story that began over a century ago still grows, with every step guided by the same strong purpose.
