History

Ada Lovelace Day is a worldwide celebration of the achievements that women have made in STEM industries, which stands for science, technology, engineering, and maths.

The day is about increasing the profile of females in STEM. The hope is that by doing this we will help to create new role models for women all across the globe! This will help to encourage more females to take roles within STEM sectors.

The date was founded by Suw Charman-Anderson back in 2009. One of her reasons for creating this date is because she was concerned that females in the tech world were invisible.

Instead of highlighting the problem, she decided that the best way to tackle this would be to highlight unseen women, shouting loud about all of the incredible things that these women have accomplished. It is not hard to see why Ada Lovelace was the obvious choice to kick things off!

FAQ
How did Ada Lovelace’s early fascination with flight influence her scientific pursuits?
At 12, Ada Lovelace conceptualized a flying machine. She studied bird anatomy and materials, designing a winged apparatus powered by steam. This early project showcased her inventive spirit and foreshadowed her future contributions to computing.
What unique events have been held to commemorate Ada Lovelace Day?
In 2015, the “Ada.Ada.Ada” one-woman show premiered at the Edinburgh International Science Festival. The performance featured an LED dress and highlighted Ada’s life and work, touring internationally to promote diversity in STEM.
Are there any myths or misconceptions about Ada Lovelace’s contributions to computing?
A common misconception is that Ada Lovelace was the sole “first computer programmer.” While she wrote pioneering algorithms for Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, some argue that Babbage himself also developed early programs. Thus, both made significant contributions to early programming concepts.
How has Ada Lovelace been honored in modern technology?
The U.S. Department of Defense named a computer programming language “Ada” in her honor in the 1980s. This language is used in critical systems, reflecting her lasting impact on software development.
What are some unique ways Ada Lovelace Day is celebrated globally?
Beyond lectures and workshops, enthusiasts organize “Wikipedia edit-a-thons” to improve content about women in STEM. These events enhance the representation of female scientists and engineers online.
Did Ada Lovelace’s upbringing influence her scientific achievements?
Yes, her mother, Lady Byron, feared Ada might inherit her father’s poetic temperament. To counter this, she immersed Ada in mathematics and science from an early age, fostering her analytical skills.
How did Ada Lovelace’s work influence future generations of women in STEM?
Ada’s visionary ideas about computing’s potential have inspired countless women to pursue careers in technology and science. Ada Lovelace Day itself serves as a platform to highlight women’s achievements in these fields, encouraging more to follow in her footsteps.
Are there any notable artistic tributes to Ada Lovelace?
In 2022, a statue of Ada Lovelace was installed in London, sculpted by Etienne and Mary Millner. Based on a portrait by Margaret Sarah Carpenter, it honors her contributions to computing and stands as a symbol of women’s achievements in STEM.
What role did Ada Lovelace’s social connections play in her scientific work?
Ada was mentored by Charles Babbage, known as the “father of the computer.” Their collaboration on the Analytical Engine combined Babbage’s engineering expertise with Ada’s visionary insights, leading to foundational concepts in computer science.
How has Ada Lovelace’s legacy been preserved in educational institutions?
Ada College in London, focused on digital skills, is named in her honor. This institution aims to equip students with the expertise needed for careers in technology, reflecting Ada’s pioneering spirit.
